Why need this
Comfortable After Birth
Nothing charming about some ‘granny undies’, but in the first days after birth you will use the huge maternity pads, so you need undies that are able to hold them in place. Besides that, you might have a wound from a c-section (even when you are not planning to have one) and your undies would only be comfortable if they are sitting at your belly button. Granny undies provide this. Note that most of our mums did not care that much about the charming bit in the first weeks or even months after birth…
Use it for
Cover Up & Tuck In
Straight after birth you will be bleeding and this will continue for quite a bit of time. The bleeding is often a bit heavier than with a regular period, so maternity pads are bigger than what you might have been used to. It is not recommended to use any internal sanitary products in the first 6 weeks after birth and you most likely will not be comfortable to use these in that time frame as well. To hold a maternity pad you need a proper size undie. You will also find that your tummy will be exceptional flappy straight after birth and you might have a c-section scar healing where your regular undies would sit. Granny undies will rise up to your belly button and chuck that flappy belly right in, making you all the more comfortable.
Our Mum’s Tips
5 Tips For Buying Maternity Underwear
Our mums have shared a lot of their thoughts and experiences about maternity undies over the years. Things they consider most important when buying maternity undies are the following:
- Height of your underwear – regular underwear might sit right in your c-section scar/wound and therefore you will need undies that will sit as high as at your belly button.
- High cut – undies with a high cut are best when recovering from labour. They will chuck your belly in and cover any scars/wounds that might be there.
- Bigger size – buying bigger size undies might be a good way to be able to cover a pregnant belly or after labour belly (that will still be bigger than what you were used to before; it will take a bit of time for everything to go back to its ‘normal’ shape).
- Hold pads – undies that will hold pads properly are a must. Note that maternity pads are huge compared to regular sanitary pads.
- Throw out – consider that you might want to just throw those undies out afterwards as they could get soiled quite a bit. Cheap ones might be your best bet.
